Founder Stories

Hopelessness is an all too common part of the mental health journey. I’ve watched loved ones try one thing after another — some provider, some medication, some program. Every time something doesn’t work, it’s hard to muster up the courage and the hope to start all over again. In five to ten years, mental healthcare is going to look radically different: instead of being a guessing game of trial-and-error, mental healthcare will be precisely and accurately tailored to each individual through data. I started Spring Health because I wanted to build that future — where the hopelessness of guessing is replaced with the hope of data-driven, accurate care.

We need to do a better job of managing mental healthcare, and we need to do it now more than ever. Every year, millions of people need help but don’t know where to go, are concerned about the stigma, or can’t afford the cost. Even when someone does get treatment, providers have no way of knowing which treatment, or what kind of therapy, is most likely to work for them. I founded Spring Health because mental healthcare shouldn’t be this broken—patients deserve much better.

Meet a Few
of Our Team

John Krystal, MD, is a highly esteemed psychiatrist and neuroscientist whose work focuses on understanding the underlying mechanisms of addiction, depression, and other mental illnesses. He is currently the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine, and the Chief of Psychiatry at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Nikolaos Koutsouleris, MD, is a highly respected psychiatrist and neuroscientist whose work focuses on using machine learning and other advanced techniques to improve the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses. He is currently a Professor of Psychiatry at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany, and the Director of the Munich Center for Machine Learning in Psychiatry.

Svetha Venkatesh, PhD, is a renowned computer scientist and academic who specializes in machine learning and data mining. She is currently a Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Centre for Pattern Recognition and Data Analytics (PRaDA) at Deakin University in Australia.

Myrna M. Weissman, PhD is a Diane Goldman Kemper Family Professor of Epidemiology in Psychiatry at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, and Chief of the Division of Translational Epidemiology at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. She has authored more than 600 scientific publications related to psychiatric disorders and psychiatric epidemiology. Dr. Weissman is best known for developing the Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) approach to treating depression, which has since become a widely used and effective therapy for depression and other mood disorders.

Martin Paulus, MD is a renowned neuroscientist and psychiatrist who is widely recognized for his groundbreaking research on the neural mechanisms underlying addiction, decision-making, and emotion regulation.
