I’ve spent much of my career applying machine learning and AI in various contexts. And one thing I've learned in my career is that conversations with therapists, clients, and clinical teams made it clear that the stakes in mental health are human lives.
You’re not just optimizing for speed or personalization. You’re stepping into the most vulnerable spaces of someone’s life. Mental health care is built on trust, connection, and safety, and AI must purposefully become part of that dynamic.
That’s why I don’t believe AI safety is just a technical challenge. Yes, there are algorithms to fine-tune and guardrails to build. But those are just the mechanics. In this field, safety is emotional. Relational. Deeply human.
And when we treat it like a systems problem instead of a people problem, we risk losing what matters most: the patient-provider relationship at the heart of care.
The question isn’t just: “How do we keep the technology safe?”
It’s also: “How do we protect and grow the human relationship this technology now touches?”

In most industries, AI safety means technical accuracy, content moderation, and data protection. Those matter here, too.
But in mental health, “safety” is broader and more human. It’s not just about whether a model performs—it’s about whether someone feels respected, protected, and cared for in vulnerable moments.
To ground this work, we think about AI safety across four core pillars.

We secure data across every layer: usage, storage, access, and transit. Customers deserve confidence that their information is protected with strict controls and regular audits.
At the product level, we embed transparency and consent. Members and providers always know when AI is in use—and participation is always a choice.
Governance
Trust isn’t earned through terms of service—it’s earned through clarity and accountability.
Our AI governance board members—spanning clinical, legal, engineering, and product—work together to evaluate risk, monitor behavior, and ensure we’re building responsibly.
Model fairness
Fairness is one of the hardest challenges in mental health AI—not because it’s new, but because it’s constantly evolving.
Bias once meant gender or race. Now we know it can show up in how we represent neurodivergent experiences or use language across identities and cultures.
There’s no one-size-fits-all “safe” output. That’s why we invest in systems that monitor and surface patterns to our clinical and technical teams—and why fairness isn’t a one-time fix. It’s a continuous process of learning and improving.

AI must be designed to function and earn and maintain the trust of providers and members. That means building systems that are transparent, consent-based, and always aligned with the clinical relationship—not competing with it.
One of our core principles is that AI is an enabler of care—not a replacement. Especially in high-acuity contexts, where nuance and connection are essential, no machine can replicate what a trained therapist brings to the room. What AI can do is reduce the administrative weight that pulls clinicians away from their patients.
We see this across several tools:
- Pre-appointment intake: A brief, guided experience that helps members share context ahead of a session—summarized for providers to personalize care from minute one
- In-the-moment chat: A secure, optional space for members to reflect between sessions, with clear paths to human support when needed
- Automated session summaries and takeaways: Designed to reduce note-taking burden while giving members a clear recap—without drifting into diagnosis
These tools exist along a spectrum of engagement. Some members may only use the intake form, while others may opt for deeper support between sessions. The key is that every interaction is opt-in, clearly labeled, and built to preserve—not disrupt—the therapeutic alliance.
The same goes for providers. Some may embrace summaries, while others may prefer full control. We build with that in mind, giving clinicians the agency to practice in a way that aligns with their expertise and patients’ needs.
We’re not here to dictate how people connect—we’re here to support them in whatever way helps them connect best.
The future of AI in mental healthcare: Safe, predictive, and personalized
There’s a lot of noise in the AI space right now: big promises, bold claims, and futuristic visions of care. But in mental health, we don’t have the luxury of hype. We have people who need help now, and a system that often makes it hard to get.
That’s why I see our AI roadmap as a responsibility. We’re building tools to improve access, safety, and connection—without compromising trust.
One of the clearest opportunities is helping people find the right care faster. The traditional pathway—searching directories, vetting therapists, repeating your story—creates friction that pushes people away. Of course, none of this matters if it isn’t safe. That’s why we invest in bias evaluation, model monitoring, transparency standards, and human oversight.
