    We started Spring Health in 2016 with a simple but bold idea: AI could disrupt the status quo in mental healthcare. Our first machine learning models aimed to drastically reduce the trial-and-error process of finding the right care. This wasn’t just about advancing technology—it was about solving a systemic problem and helping people heal faster.

    Fast forward to today: AI is everywhere—accessible, conversational, and transforming industries far beyond healthcare. But with this rapid adoption comes a profound responsibility. The question is no longer whether AI belongs in mental healthcare—it does. The conversation now is about how we use it responsibly to ensure it serves people safely, ethically, and equitably.

    The stakes could not be higher. Suicide rates in the U.S. have risen by 30% in the past two decades (CDC), and nearly 50 million Americans experience mental illness annually (NAMI). Traditional healthcare systems are overwhelmed and fragmented. AI offers us a chance to rethink mental healthcare entirely—but its power depends on how thoughtfully we wield it. We must continue to address the safety risks of AI in mental health head on, with rigorous oversight and protocols to mitigate these risks.

    Here’s what I deeply believe about the future of AI in mental health:

    • AI will expand access to mental healthcare: AI will expand access to mental healthcare by reducing wait times, personalizing care, and providing support in underserved areas while complementing the work of human clinicians.
    • As a result, stigma around mental healthcare will decline: The privacy and accessibility of AI tools will make seeking support as common as using a fitness tracker.
    • Mental healthcare will become predictive and preventative: AI will identify mental health concerns early through real-time data and predictive models, intervening before crises occur.
    • Hyper-personalization will drive  better outcomes: AI will dynamically adjust care delivery based on real-time behavior, motivation, and progress, enabling lasting engagement and more effective  care.
    • Safe, ethical AI will set the gold standard: Companies that prioritize transparency, clinical validation, and ethical AI practices will establish the benchmark for trust and safety in the industry.
    • Care will become more continuous: AI will provide ongoing support, evolving care from periodic therapy sessions to continuous engagement and management.
    • AI will enhance the provider experience: AI will elevate the provider experience by reducing administrative burdens, optimizing patient-provider matching, and enhancing intersession support. This allows providers to focus more on delivering meaningful in-session care, leading to more rewarding and fulfilling work.

    AI is only as strong as its foundation. Its fairness and accuracy depend on diverse, ethically sourced data and responsible use. Without this, AI risks bias, disparities, and even harm. But with the right safeguards, AI becomes a force for good—enabling earlier diagnoses, democratizing access, optimizing resources, and improving clinical decisions.

    AI alone isn’t the answer. Solving the mental health crisis demands both innovation and responsibility, with ethics and transparency at the core. If we rise to this moment with care and intention, AI can transform and eliminate every barrier to mental healthcare—making it more compassionate, effective, and truly accessible. This is why Adam and I started Spring Health, and what we will continue to champion every day.
